We describe the reactivity of hypersilyl-functionalized Zintl cluster salt K[Ge9(Hyp)3] towards nickel reagents Ni(COD)2 and Ni(Cp)2, which gives rise to markedly different complexes.

This has been exploited in a reaction at the organic substituents of the cluster which produces water as a by-product.
